Healing through nutrition: My Connection Between Food and Emotional Well-Being

Updated: Jun 22

In today's fast-paced world, the connection between food and emotional well-being is often overlooked. However, holistic nutrition emphasizes the importance of nourishing the mind, body, and spirit through balanced, whole, and wholesome foods. By integrating holistic nutritional practices into my daily life, I achieved not only physical health but also emotional and spiritual healing. This blog explores my transformative journey and the power of food, detailing specific foods and practices that supported my overall well-being and sharing my personal journey of overcoming perimenopause and menopause through plant medicines.

The Role of Holistic Nutrition

Holistic nutrition goes beyond calorie counting and macronutrients. It considers the whole person, focusing on how food affects our mental and emotional states. The foods we consume can either contribute to emotional balance or exacerbate stress and anxiety. For instance, processed foods high in sugar and unhealthy fats can lead to mood swings and fatigue, while nutrient-dense foods can enhance mental clarity, stabilize moods, and promote a sense of well-being.

Specific Foods for my Emotional and Spiritual Healing

Certain foods that supported my emotional and spiritual healing:

  1. Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens that are rich in folate, which helped produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and motivation.

  2. Fatty Fish: Salmon which is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which has helped to reduce my symptoms of depression and anxiety.

  3. Berries: Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants that protect my brain from oxidative stress and improve my cognitive function.

  4. Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds are excellent sources of magnesium, which plays a crucial role in my brain function and mood regulation.

  5. Fermented Foods: Sauerkraut and kombucha contain probiotics that support my gut health, which is closely linked to mental health through the gut-brain axis.

Holistic Practices for my Well-Being

In addition to specific foods, certain holistic practices have enhanced the benefits of my nutrition journey:

  1. Mindful Eating: Paying attention to what I eat, savoring each bite, and being present during meals has improved digestion and increased satisfaction.

  2. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated has been essential for maintaining my energy levels and cognitive function. I aim to drink at least 120oz of water a day. (an ounce per pound of body weight, depending on activity levels too)

  3. Herbal Teas: I incorporated healing, herbal teas like chamomile, burdock and peppermint can promote relaxation and reduce stress. Burdock root tea which is an anti-inflammatory and a powerhouse of antioxidants.

  4. Plant Medicine: Using natural remedies, such as ginger root, have provided me relief from various ailments without the side effects of conventional medications. i use this in place of Tylenol.

My Personal Journey with Plant Medicine

Navigating perimenopause and menopause was challenging, but I found solace and healing through plant medicine. Traditional over-the-counter medications like Tylenol were no longer necessary once I discovered the power of ginger root. Ginger's natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties made it an effective replacement for Tylenol, alleviating headaches and muscle aches associated with hormonal changes.

I was supported with raspberry tinctures for uterus support, chaste tree berry for hormonal balancing, passionflower for anxiety and supporting my nervous sytem, plus so much more.

By embracing holistic nutrition and plant medicine, I experienced a significant improvement in my overall well-being. I avoided a hysterectomy, which I thought I was destined for. It felt like I sailed through "the change" considering everything was manageable through holistic methods. The combination of nutrient-rich foods and natural remedies helped me manage symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, enhancing my emotional and spiritual health.

Conclusion

The connection between food and emotional well-being is profound. By adopting a holistic approach to nutrition, this supported my mental and emotional health, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Incorporating specific nutrient-dense foods and holistic practices into my daily routine promoted healing and well-being. My personal journey through peri-menopause and menopause highlights the transformative power of plant medicine and holistic nutrition. Let food be your ally in the pursuit of emotional and spiritual health, and experience the profound benefits it can bring to your life.

Love,

Lisa

Ginger root is an anti-inflammatory, it can also help fungal infections that cause a wide variety of conditions, from yeast infections to jock itch and athlete’s foot. It's amazing at helping with nausea! Caution, it may lower blood pressure or thin the blood. You can purchase it in capsule form from a health food store, a 1200mg capsule does the trick for me. I always say start off with a smaller dose and work your way up, to make sure you don't have any intolerance or interactions. I suggest consulting with a dr. or naturopath to make sure there's no interactions if you're taking any other medications or supplements. 😊
